This topic previews fishing-related changes in the expansion, The Burning Crusade. This page is written 'Out Of Character'. It is a work in progress. On this page:

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." - Henry David Thoreau

Introduction

When Blizzard started revealing details of the expansion, they promised some fresh fish:

"We're still evaluating some ideas for fishing that we're not ready to share yet, but I can tell you that there will definitely be new high-level fish for our anglers to catch in the expansion." - Frank Pearce, Executive Producer, July 2006.

And not much more has been known until now. The information on this page is taken from the beta version of The Burning Crusade. It will probably contain spoilers. Most of this information is first-hand - collect by myself. I will continue to update it as more discoveries are made.

Last major update 1 December 2006, based on beta 2.0.0-2.0.2 (I can see no changes in 2.0.3).

Master Fishing

The Burning Crusade raises the maximum possible fishing skill to 375. Master rank is trained using the book "Master Fishing - The Art of Angling". This is sold by Juno Duffrain, who can be found by the Umbrafen Lake in Cenarion Refuge, Zangarmarsh. The same vendor sells both to alliance and horde. The location is relatively easy to reach for someone at level 60 - just head west from the Hellfire Peninsular. The book costs 5 gold and can be resold. The book requires level 45 and fishing skill 275 to read. I assume this means characters not able to use the Dark Portal to visit Outland will still be able to achieve 375 fishing skill.

Each skill increase takes at least 10 catches - the increases are still somewhat random, with a range from 10 to 13. The average number of catches per point of skill gained was:

  • Skill 300-350: 10.5 catches per skill point.
  • Skill 350-375: 11.5 catches per skill point.

Increasing skill from 300 to 375 takes just over 800 successful catches. There is no need to fish in Outland - skill can be gained in Azeroth too.

Draenei and Red Snappah

Azuremyst Isle and Bloodmyst Isle, the two new Draenei zones, contain the same fish as other level 1-10 and 10-20 zones. Only Raw Slitherskin Mackerel can be caught from the coast of Azuremyst Isle. The coast of Bloodmyst Isle contains Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore, Raw Slitherskin Mackerel and Oily Blackmouth. Named inland areas of Azuremyst Isle (such as Silverline Lake) have Raw Brilliant Smallfish and Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper. There is a quirk in other inland areas - they contain the zone's coastal fish.

Schools of Red Snapper can be found close to the Draenai starting area, near Ammen Ford. These pools cannot be fished conventionally with a fishing pool. They can only be fished as part of the quest, "Red Snapper - Very Tasty!" from Diktynna, in Azuremyst Isle. The quest involves swimming close to schools and using the Draenei Fishing Net (provided) to catch ten Red Snapper. Some schools spawn an Angry Murloc. The reward for the quest is a basic Fishing Pole and a Shiny Bauble.

Red Snappers featured in the movie Red Snappah! - a parody of the Ahn'Qiraj war effort in which stacks of fished Red Snappers were continually requested. The movie was an entry for the Xfire Machinima competition.

Blood Elf

The two new Blood Elf zones are similar to the Draenei zones, and so similar to other level 1-10 and 10-20 zones. Raw Slitherskin Mackerel can be caught from the coast of Eversong Woods, Raw Brilliant Smallfish and Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper from named inland areas. The coast of the Ghostlands contains Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore, Raw Slitherskin Mackerel and Oily Blackmouth. From inland areas of the Ghostlands can be caught Raw Brilliant Smallfish, Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish and Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper.

Fish-based Food that Gives Buffs

The Burning Crusade contains food-based buffs that are a lot better than pre-expansion food. Most of the list below is based on Thottbot data.

Fish-based Food that Gives Buffs
Cooked Food Minimum Level (to eat) Buff Duration (minutes) Fish Where to Catch
Blackened Sporefish 55 +20 Stamina, +8 Mana/5 seconds 30 Zangarian Sporefish Zangarmarsh.
Feltail Delight 55 +20 Stamina, +20 Spirit 30 Spotted Feltail Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh.
Golden Fish Sticks 55 +44 Healing, +20 Spirit 30 Golden Darter Terokkar Forest.
Grilled Mudfish 55 +20 Agility, +20 Spirit 30 Figluster's Mudfish Nagrand, Netherstorm.
Poached Bluefish 55 +23 Spell Damage, +23 Spirit 30 Icefin Bluefish Nagrand, Netherstorm.
Spicy Crawdad 55 +30 Stamina, +20 Spirit 30 Furious Crawdad Terokkar Forest (Highland Mixed Schools only)

Early "market" (Auction House) trials suggest Grilled Mudfish and Feltail Delight sell for the lowest price, Golden Fish Sticks sell at about 150% of that price, Poached Bluefish about 200%, and Spicy Crawdad 250%. So if Feltail Delight sold for 20 gold a stack, Spicy Crawdad would sell for about 50 gold a stack. Precise prices on beta are meaningless because of the inflated money supply, but the relative prices are still valid indicators.

Cooking is also trained via a book, "Master Cookbook". It is sold by vendors in Cenarion Refuge, Zangarmarsh (Horde and Alliance); Thrallmar inn, Hellfire Peninsula (Horde); and Honor Hold inn, Hellfire Peninsula (Alliance).

Recipes are sold by vendors:

  • Golden Fish Sticks and Spicy Crawdad - Allerian Stronghold (Alliance) or Stonebreaker Hold (Horde), Terokkar Forest.
  • Feltail Delight and Blackened Trout - Orebor Harborage (Alliance - requires Neutral reputation with Kurenai) or Swamprat Post (Horde), Zangarmarsh.
  • Poached Bluefish and Grilled Mudfish - Telaar (Alliance - requires Neutral reputation with Kurenai) or Garadar (Horde), Nagrand.

There is no known vendor for the Blackened Sporefish recipe.

Base Fishing Skill

The table below shows the minimum fishing skill required to fish in different areas of Outland.

Zone Base Fishing Skill
Base Fishing Skill Required Zones
305 Zangarmarsh east (Umbrafen Lake, The Lagoon).
355 Terokkar Forest (Silmyr Lake, water near Tuurem), Zangarmarsh west (Marshlight Lake, Sporewind Lake, Serpent Lake).
380 Nagrand (east of Halaa, including Skysong Lake and the Elemental Plateau), Netherstorm (Eco-Dome Midrealm).
430 Nagrand (Lake Sunspring), Terokkar Forest (Blackwind Lake, Lake Ere'Noru and Lake Jorune).

Some of the named areas around the edges of Serpent Lake in Zangarmarsh have a base skill of 305, so it is possible to fish certain pools within the lake at this lower skill level. Blackwind Lake, Lake Ere'Noru, Lake Jorune and the Elemental Plateau can only be reached with a flying mount. Blackwind Valley and Skettis, also in the same area as Blackwind Lake, have a base skill below 375, probably 355 like the rest of Terokkar Forest.

Shadowmoon Valley and other areas in which Felblood Snapper are caught currently have a very low (under 300) skill requirement.

Many areas of water cannot be fished. Some are too shallow. Others warn that no fish are there when you try and fish. No dungeon instances are known to contain fishable water. There are no known instances (dungeons) that contain fishable water.

Initial tests suggest "get-aways" still occur at less than base fishing skill plus 95. So to fish reliably in Lake Sunspring, Blackwind Lake or Lake Ere'Noru with existing gear, you'll need 375 fishing skill, all the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza fishing gear, and a +100 lure.

Fishing Equipment

One new fishing pole has been added - Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole. The pole gives a +20 bonus to fishing, but requires 200 fishing skill. It also has a huge (+52) stamina bonus, which should help fishing folk survive a few seconds longer. The pole has the same bonus as the Big Iron Fishing Pole, but is easier to gain at high level. Seth's pole is a quest reward for Rather Be Fishin' from Seth in refuge area of Shattrath City. The Pristine Shimmerscale Eels required for the quest can't be caught - they are dropped by the Shimmerscale Eels in Silmyr Lake. The pole should be useful for Alliance characters, who cannot gain the +25 bonus Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000.

Outland Open-Water Fishing

The following table lists fish caught in open water. Outland has no sea - only inland water.

Outland Fish
Fish Where to Catch Use (Food)
Barbed Gill Trout Terokkar Forest, Nagrand, Netherstorm, Shadowmoon Valley, Zangarmarsh. Blackened Trout.
Felblood Snapper Hellfire Peninsula (Pools of Aggonar), Nagrand (Forge Camp: Hate), Shadowmoon Valley ("water" and lava). Unknown.
Figluster's Mudfish Nagrand, Netherstorm. Grilled Mudfish.
Golden Darter Terokkar Forest. Golden Fish Sticks.
Icefin Bluefish Nagrand, Netherstorm. Poached Bluefish.
Spotted Feltail Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh. Feltail Delight.
Zangarian Sporefish Zangarmarsh. Blackened Sporefish.

Furious Crawdad cannot be caught in open water, only Highland Mixed Schools - see the Catching Furious Crawdad and Mr. Pinchy topic.

In addition to fish, other items are rarely caught from open-water fishing:

  • Curious Crate - boxes that contain 2-6 Knothide Leather Scraps, 1-3 Netherweave Cloth, or 1-3 Fel Iron Ore.
  • Goldenscale Vendorfish - they sell to vendors for 6 gold.
  • Inscribed Scrollcase - these contain 1-3 level 60 scrolls.
  • Mote of Water (1-2) - ten motes can be converted to one Primal Water by clicking on the stack. Primal Water cannot be converted back to motes.
  • Off-hand fish - Enormous Barbed Gil Trout (sic) and Huge Spotted Feltail.

Open Water Catch Rates

I have sampled catches across five locations, (one for each zone/skill combination). Each location was fished for at least two hours:

  • Nagrand, East of Halaa.
  • Nagrand, Lake Sunspring.
  • Terrokar Forest, Silmyr Lake.
  • Zangarmarsh, Marshlight Lake.
  • Zangarmarsh, Umbrafen Lake.

I found no significant variation between places within the same zone. I also fished across a range of time periods, but found no significant variation by time. I cannot be certain that these variations do not exist, but if they do exist they are minor (a few percent difference) or use entirely unexpected patterns.

The average catch rate per minute was 2.1, which is lower than the 2.5 previously recorded in Azeroth. I subsequently compared the average catch rate over an hour of continuous fishing in Stormwind and Zangarmarsh, and both were the same at 2.4 catches per minute.

The table below shows the percentage of all catches in each zone for each fish type.

Outland Open Water Catch Rates
Zone Catches Barbed Gill Trout Golden Darter Figluster's Mudfish Icefin Bluefish Spotted Feltail Zangarian Sporefish Other
Nagrand 519 56% - 21% 22% - - 1%
Terrokar Forest 381 64% 22% - - 15% - 0%
Zangarmarsh 782 71% - - - 15% 13% 1%

Barbed Gill Trout offer no buff when cooked, so are of little use. However, they are the majority of all fish caught. So how can you catch the fish you want more than about 20% of the time? The answer is, of course, pools.

Outland Pool Fishing

Pools of fish called schools are common in Outland. They behave in the same way as pools in Azeroth - after catching 2-8 fish, each pool disappears. Pools then reappear over time.

Known named fish pools are:

  • Bluefish School (Icefin Bluefish) - Nagrand.
  • Feltail School (Spotted Feltail) - Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh.
  • Highland Mixed School (Furious Crawdad and Golden Darter) - Terokkar Forest (Blackwind Lake, Lake Ere'Noru and Lake Jorune) - see the Catching Furious Crawdad and Mr. Pinchy topic.
  • Mudfish School (Figluster's Mudfish) - Nagrand.
  • School of Darter (Golden Darter) - Terokkar Forest.
  • Sporefish School (Zangarian Sporefish) - Zangarmarsh.

These appear in zones where the named fish can also be caught by open-water fishing, except for Furious Crawdad, which can only be caught from Highland Mixed Schools.

Two further pool types contain other items:

  • Pure Water (1-2 Mote of Water) - Nagrand - see the Fishing Pure Water topic.
  • Steam Pump Flotsam (Heavy Supply Crates and Steam Pump Debris) - Zangarmarsh.

Each Heavy Supply Crate contains Elemental Blasting Powder, Fel Iron Ore, Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, or White Smoke Flares.

Pure Water pools look like the Patches of Elemental Water in Azshara. In lower parts of Nagrand, Pure Water pools are mixed with Bluefish and Mudfish Schools. However, the Elemental Plateau (above the Throne of the Elements) in Nagrand contains a separate set of six pool spawning points where only Pure Water pools appear. This area requires a flying mount or (Druid) flying ability to reach. See the Fishing Pure Water topic for more information about fishing these pools.

For a full explanation of how to fish Highland Mixed Schools in Terokkar Forest, including Mr. Pinchy and its Magical Crawdad pet, see the Catching Furious Crawdad and Mr. Pinchy topic.

All pools also sometimes contain the same other (non-fish) items caught from open-water fishing, such as Curious Crate and Goldenscale Vendorfish.

Pool Catch Rates

I have fished 30-35 of each pool type, in each zone the pool type is found. All during beta version 2.0.2. This isn't enough to give precise catch rates, but should give a reasonable indication of patterns. The table below summarises the average quantity of fish gained from fishing one pool empty, for each type of pool.

Outland Pool Catch Rates
Pool Type Pools Sampled Catches per Pool Average quantity gained from fishing one pool
Average Range Main Fish Secondary Fish Mote of Water Other Items
Bluefish School 39 6.0 4-8 Icefin Bluefish 4.7 - - 0.7 0.9
Feltail School 70 4.0 2-6 Spotted Feltail 3.1 - - 0.3 0.7
Highland Mixed School 347 3.1 2-4 Furious Crawdad 2.0 Golden Darter 0.6 0.2 0.4
Mudfish School 32 2.9 2-4 Figluster's Mudfish 2.4 - - 0.2 0.4
Pure Water 124 3.1 2-4 - - - - 4.2 0.3
School of Darter 34 3.1 2-4 Golden Darter 2.2 - - 0.5 0.6
Sporefish School 35 6.5 4-8 Zangarian Sporefish 5.1 - - 0.5 1.0
Steam Pump Flotsam 35 3.1 2-4 Heavy Supply Crate 0.9 Steam Pump Debris 1.3 0.5 0.6

The total number of Motes of Water caught is shown. Since more than one mote can be caught by one catch, the quantity of motes gained by fishing Pure Water pools is greater than the number of catches.

It is important to recognise that the size of pools varies by type. Most contain 2-4 catches, but Feltail Schools contain 2-6, while Bluefish and Sporefish Schools contain 4-8. The average number of catches is approximately the mid-point of the range.

All this makes comparing the average catch per pool for motes and other items misleading: The best yield tends to come from the biggest pool. Instead, express the catches of motes and other items as a percentage of the total catch. These are much more consistent. Excluding pools of Pure Water, 5% of catches are Mote of Water - with an equal chance of catching either one or two motes. Over all pool types, around 13% of catches will be "other items", which breaks down as:

  • Curious Crate - 4%
  • Enormous Barbed Gil Trout - 2%
  • Goldenscale Vendorfish - 1%
  • Huge Spotted Feltail - 2%
  • Inscribed Scrollcase - 4%

Pool Fishing Efficiency

At least two-thirds of the catch from named-fish pools are that single named fish. In contrast, around a fifth of fish caught in relevant open water will be that named fish. So pools are clearly better. Right? Maybe. Take Golden Darter as an example.

Around 20% of the catch from open water in Terrokar Forest will be Golden Darter. Assuming 2.5 catches a minute, you'll get about 30 Golden Darter an hour fishing this way.

A School of Darter contains an average of 2.2 Golden Darter, so you would need to fish from 13 or 14 pools to catch 30 fish. As a rough benchmark, one can fish 20 pools an hour, assuming a steady supply of pools. School of Darter contain a lower number of fish than most pools, and fast flying mounts will ultimately reduce search/travel times. So, assume 25 pools an hour.

Unfortunately only half of the pools in Terokkar Forest are School of Darter. While you can initially "cherry pick" School of Darter and ignore the Feltail Schools completely, you cannot sustain this (see the Pool Appearance topic for an explanation of why). After 6 or 8 pools, you may not be able to find any more School of Darter unless you fish both pool types. So that leaves you fishing 25 pools an hour, only half of which are likely to give the fish you want.

And that assumes there are 25 pools an hour to fish. Which there aren't. Terrokar Forest has around 17 or 18 points where School of Darter may spawn, and typically pools won't repawn until about an hour after they were last fished.

So, you cannot expect to fish more than 10 School of Darter per hour, which is a far slower way of catching Golden Darter than open-water fishing, even if you want to catch Spotted Feltail as well. And you have to keep on moving. And you're in competition with other players.

The only remaining advantage to pool fishing for Golden Darter is the far higher catch rate of mote and other items. In an hour you might accumulate enough motes to make one Primal Water, a small heap of scrolls, ore, leather and cloth, and possibly a Goldenscale Vendorfish. Those may be almost as valuable as the fish you are trying to catch, which may tilt the balance back in favour of pool fishing.

Some pools are clearly better than open-water fishing. Bluefish Schools contain just under five Icefin Bluefish each, so you only need fish 6 pools an hour to make pool-fishing attractive. There are far more pool spawning points in Nagrand, so sustaining pool fishing hour after hour should be reasonable. Spawning points in Nagrand are shared by three different pool types. Assuming each is equally likely to appear (which seems reasonable), 7 or 8 Bluefish Schools should be fishable each hour, even if all pools have to be fished to sustain it. In addition, one of the other three pools is Pure Water, so vastly more motes will be gained than from the equivalent open-water fishing.

Pure Water pools compare favourably to grinding monsters for Motes of Water: Mob drop rates are around 30%, so you'd need to kill about 14 Lake/Muck Spirit/Surgers to gain the same as fishing one pool of Pure Water. The set of six Pure Water spawning points on the Elemental Plateau take just over an hour to respawn once fished, so fishing them cannot be sustained. But if you are lucky, and fish the area when nobody else has fished it recently, you can gain around 25 motes in about 10 minutes of fishing. Primal Water (made from 10 motes) is an essential building block of many professions, and will always be in demand.
